I have been writing articles on ArmchairGM.com for about a month now - check the Manny Stiles ArmchairGM.com archive here.

Here is an excerpt from a recent submission:

So, what is a sport?
Most people more or less describe ‘sport’ as any athletic venture in which they cannot compete in. Any activity they CAN compete in certainly is not 'worthy' of being called a sport. Ex:

Football=I would get hurt badly=Sport
Eating=Do that to survive= NOT a sport
Basketball=Amare would destroy me=Sport
Bowling="I'm a drunk mith a bowlning poblem"=NOT a sport

Webster’s defines Sport as “any recreational activity; specifically a game or competition requiring physical exertion.” Ex:

Soccer = lots of running in soccer = sport
Fishing/poker/chess/video games = sitting, drinking beer, occasional scratching, possible hand movement and exhaustion from crafting talltales = NOT a sport (or not much OF a sport, at least)
Bowling = wait, this IS a sport according to Webster's.

Manny Stiles’ definition of a sport – any activity which has two or more opponents (or teams) in which there is a result of Win and Lose. Also, any activity which a bet can be placed on corresponding directly with the result. It’s just easier.

I agree with the Webster’s definition of exertion which is “to put into action”. But I also believe that NOT doing anything can be something you have to ‘put into action’ by forcibly NOT doing anything.

So according to Webster’s, professional wrestling IS a sport. By my definition it is NOT a sport NO ONE BETS ON WRESTLING. Or the Washington Generals (except Krusty the Klown).

Webster’s doesn’t draw a line at man vs. robot or for video games. Neither do I, in some instances. Like when you bet on it.
